Mechanism of action of Coliprotec

Coliprotec aids in the prevention of post-weaning diarrhea in pigs caused by F4 (K88)-positive Escherichia coli by stimulating the immune system of the animal.

Post-weaning diarrhea is an infection that usually affects pigs in the first two weeks after weaning. Diarrhea results from ingesting pathogenic E. coli bacteria present in the maternity or nursery environment. These bacteria attach to intestinal cells by their fimbriae, then release the toxins causing the symptoms of the disease. The E. coli bacteria responsible for porcine post-weaning diarrhea mainly carry F4 fimbriae.

Coliprotec is an oral live vaccine recommended for vaccination of weaner piglets as an aid to preventing post-weaning diarrhea caused by F4(K88)-positive E. coli.

It is recommended to vaccinate healthy weaned pigs of 17 or more days. Diarrhea associated with F4-positive E. coli is generally observed in the first two weeks after weaning. Economic losses can be significant, particularly due to weight loss, weight heterogeneity, cost of treatment, concomitant diseases, management of sick animals and mortality, which can affect up to 20% of animals. Clinical symptoms vary widely from farm to farm and F4-positive E. coli can also cause significant ... more

E. coli associated post-weaning diarrhea: Evolution of an old disease Post-weaning diarrhea (PWD)E. coli is a major part of the commensal intestinal microflora of pigs but some E. coli strains can cause disease. PWD is considered to be an “old” disease, so veterinarians and producers are accustomed to it always being present in the “background”. On the other hand, this disease is constantly in evolution, acute crises giving place to calm years, and vice versa. These fluctuations are due to different factors such as management changes, appearance or eradication of coexisting diseases ... more

Coliprotec - Lyophilized - Escherichia coli Vaccine Avirulent Live Culture, Porcine Isolate
FOR ORAL USE ONLY IN SWINEDescription of the vaccine Coliprotec is an oral live vaccine, containing naturally avirulent Escherichia coli bacteria, recommended for the vaccination of healthy weaned pigs of 17 days or more as an aid in the prevention of post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) caused by F4(K88)-positive Escherichia coli. Clinical studies confirmed that the vaccine significantly reduced intestinal colonization of virulent enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), diarrhea, and accumulation of fluid in the intestines after a challenge.

Precautions Store refrigerated at 2-7°C (35-45°F). Do not freeze For oral use only Materials used in administering the vaccine must be free of antibiotic or disinfectant residue to prevent inactivation Do not use with antibiotics or other live vaccines for a minimum of 3 days prior to and after vaccination Remove antibiotics and disinfectants from drinking water for a minimum of 3 days prior to and after vaccination Use entire content when first opened Reconstituted vaccine should be used within 4 hours Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter ... more
